Church no.7

This morning I went to my seventh(!!) church in Edinburgh. I’m telling you, this is getting old!

I went to Community Church Edinburgh this morning.

I really liked it. A lot.

I don’t want to get ahead of myself again, but this was good.

Today’s wasn’t an average service but a time of reflection and sharing after they have finished a couple of series of sermons.

You’ll never guess what those series were on . . .

Go on, I dare you to try . . .

Yeh, alright I’ll tell you:

Being a distinctive, different, covenant, community and building life on a rhythm of prayer.

Sound like anything I like to rant about?

And, whilst it felt a little like I was eavesdropping when they shared stuff, it was brilliant to see the openness and care they had for one another. They are a real family of people.

We also shared communion. It’s a little different that at church at home. Everyone gathered together around the table and said the liturgy together over the elements because they don’t technically have a pastor or ordained minister. It was cool.

The liturgy they used at the beginning also struck a real chord within me:

One thing I have asked of the Lord,
this is what I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life;
to behold the beauty of the Lord
and to seek Him in His temple.

Call: Who is it that you seek?
Response: We seek the Lord our God.
Call: Do you seek Him with all your heart?
Response: Amen. Lord, have mercy.
Call: Do you seek Him with all your soul?
Response: Amen. Lord, have mercy.
Call: Do you seek Him with all your mind?
Response: Amen. Lord, have mercy.
Call: Do you seek Him with all your strength?
Response: Amen. Christ, have mercy.

– Northumbria Community

Powerful words based on Psalm 27 that just resonated in my heart.

Think I’ll revisit next week.

  1. Looks good Rachael. I saw a comment about handing out biscuits on the way in to the service, sounds as if it could be the place for you. See you soon. Love Mum
